The Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) 2021 Public Release (version 17.0.0) is now available for free downloading at the FHWA IHSDM website (https://highways.dot.gov/research/safety/interactive-highway-safety-design-model/interactive-highway-safety-design-model-ihsdm-overview) This Release marks a major milestone, as it is the end of FHWA’s long-term IHSDM software development. However, FHWA will continue to provide technical support and training to IHSDM users through September 2024.
FHWA will hold an “IHSDM 2021 – New Intersection Models Support Data-Driven Safety Analysis (DDSA)” webinar on Monday October 18 (1:00 – 2:30 pm ET) to introduce the new release (PDF).
What is IHSDM? To support FHWA’s DDSA initiative, the IHSDM is a suite of safety analysis tools to evaluate the safety and operational effects of project-level geometric design decisions on highways. The IHSDM Crash Prediction Module (CPM) includes a faithful implementation of Highway Safety Manual (HSM) (www.highwaysafetymanual.org) Predictive Methods (Part C), and future HSM2 methods (e.g., for roundabouts and for 6+ lane and 1-way urban arterials). The complete IHSDM suite consists of five evaluation modules plus an Economic Analyses Tool (https://highways.dot.gov/safety/interactive-highway-safety-design-model/interactive-highway-safety-design-model-ihsdm-overview).
What’s new in the IHSDM 2021 Release? The IHSDM 2021 Release includes new crash prediction capabilities for some intersection types not covered in the 1st Edition HSM, based on methods developed under NCHRP Project 17-68 (Intersection Crash Prediction Methods for the Highway Safety Manual) for inclusion in the future HSM 2nd Edition.
